Guti, who managed Real Madrid’s youth teams from 2013 to 2018, disclosed that he had recommended Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho to the club after observing their performances at the youth level. Despite his suggestions, Real Madrid officials did not make a formal move to sign either player.
Joao Felix eventually joined Real Madrid’s rivals, Atletico Madrid, from Benfica in 2019 and has since had loan spells at Chelsea and Barcelona. He is now set to return to Chelsea on a permanent six-year contract.
Jadon Sancho, meanwhile, moved to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 but has had a turbulent time with the club. During the 2023-24 season, he had a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag, leading to his exclusion from the first team and a short-term loan back to Dortmund in January 2024. Sancho has now rejoined the United squad.
In an interview on El Chiringuito, Guti commented: “I saw Joao Felix in the Youth League and he was exceptional—almost absurd how he outplayed everyone. He was a player that needed to be signed, and I recommended him to Real Madrid. At the time, we faced him in the semi-finals, and he scored three goals against us. Although Real Madrid was aware of such players, it ultimately comes down to the club’s decisions. I also saw potential in Jadon Sancho from Dortmund and suggested he be signed as well.”
Regarding Felix’s recent challenges, Guti noted: “He arrived at Atletico Madrid for €126 million at just 19, coming from a lesser league and entering a high-pressure environment. Perhaps he wasn’t fully prepared for such demands from the start.”
Felix is already in London for his medical examination and is expected to finalize his move to Chelsea soon. Sancho, who missed United’s season opener against Fulham due to an ear infection, is anticipated to return to action on Saturday against Brighton.
