Shaw’s already difficult 2024 has taken a turn for the worse, as Manchester United confirm he will miss the opening fixtures of the Premier League due to a calf injury. The 29-year-old picked up this latest setback at the start of pre-season training and is not expected to return until after the first international break.

Earlier this year, Shaw dealt with a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the rest of United’s season, including their FA Cup final triumph. Although he was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championship, he was only fit by the quarter-finals and played just 177 minutes in Germany. Another injury at the start of the new campaign is the last thing Shaw needed.

In Shaw’s absence, United manager Erik ten Hag might consider 17-year-old Harry Amass as a replacement. The young defender impressed during United’s pre-season tour of the US, starting all three friendlies and earning praise from his manager for his progress.

Tyrell Malacia is also currently injured, exacerbating United’s defensive issues. Lisandro Martinez, who filled in as a makeshift left-back during the Community Shield, might be called upon to start in that position for the season opener against Fulham on Friday if Ten Hag feels Amass is not yet ready.
