James Trafford nears Newcastle move after Burnley signs replacement

James Trafford’s move to Newcastle United is progressing as Burnley has signed a new goalkeeper, Etienne Green. Burnley is demanding £30 million for Trafford, who is also sought by Chelsea. Newcastle’s goalkeeping roster, already crowded with five senior players, may see changes if Trafford joins, potentially affecting Nick Pope’s position.

James Trafford’s potential move to Newcastle United is gaining momentum following Burnley’s recent acquisition of Etienne Green. Newcastle had previously made a £16 million bid for Trafford, the standout goalkeeper in England’s Under-21 European Championship triumph. With Burnley signing Green from Saint-Etienne, the path may be clear for Trafford’s transfer.

Green, 24, who was developed in France, has joined Burnley on a three-year contract. Burnley is reportedly holding out for £30 million for Trafford, mirroring the asking price for midfielder Sander Berge, who is also a Manchester United target. Trafford, who featured in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for this summer’s Euros, is also attracting interest from Chelsea.

Newcastle’s goalkeeping situation is already congested with five senior keepers, including recent signings Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy, along with Nick Pope, Mark Gillespie, and Martin Dubravka. Trafford’s potential addition could create further uncertainty around Pope’s future at the club.
