Zirkzee has discussed the playing style he intends to bring to United, emphasizing a “fun” approach that combines flair and tricks with intelligence and “intuition.” The high-profile signing aims to entertain fans with his dribbling and skills while also contributing to the team’s efforts by dropping deep and pressing.
Zirkzee joined United last month to provide depth and competition alongside Rasmus Hojlund in the forward line. His pace and flair complement Hojlund’s preferred hold-up play. The Dutch forward was soon joined by Leny Yoro at Old Trafford, but Yoro recently suffered an injury that will sideline him for at least three months.
In an interview with The Mirror, Zirkzee said: “I want to play a pure game. Nutmegs, chops, and backheels are integral to football for me. It’s the kid in me, reminding me that the game should be fun.
“You have to choose the right moments. It’s about intuition. I believe I have great skills, honed since childhood. But if I lose the ball, I’m eager to win it back immediately with my team. Fancy footwork is just part of my game.
“I sometimes drop into midfield, not for myself, but to support the team. I consider myself a false striker—neither a No. 9 nor a No. 10, but a 9.5! That’s how I play. I might be different, but different is good, right?”
After an extended break following his participation in Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, the 23-year-old is set to return to Manchester in the coming weeks. He is not expected to debut in the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 10, as Erik ten Hag plans to gradually integrate him into the squad.
