Atletico Madrid views Julian Alvarez as a potential star for Diego Simeone’s team, and ESPN reports that the Spanish club has made notable progress in negotiations. Atletico remains hopeful that Alvarez’s eagerness to join will help ease talks with Manchester City.

The deal under consideration would see Alvarez signing a five-year contract, securing his future in Madrid. Although €60m is a significant amount, Atletico’s board is willing to invest this to meet Simeone’s needs following Alvaro Morata’s departure to AC Milan earlier this summer.

Pep Guardiola has consistently stated that City players can leave if a suitable offer is made, which gives Atletico optimism that their bid for Alvarez will be considered. However, Alvarez’s representatives have been quiet about the potential move. They intend to resume discussions with City after the Olympics to clarify the club’s plans for the Argentine striker. Alvarez’s desire for regular first-team football is a key factor in his potential move, with Atletico offering him a chance to play a central role, something that has been difficult at City due to Erling Haaland’s presence.

Acquiring Alvarez is seen as a strategic move to bolster Atletico’s squad and equip Simeone with the necessary resources to compete at the top level. The club is also looking to revamp their attacking lineup and is in discussions with Villarreal regarding Alexander Sorloth as a replacement for Morata and Memphis Depay.
