West Ham withdrew from Jonathan David’s pursuit due to high agent fees

West Ham have exited the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David after being asked to pay £10 million in agent fees. SunSport reports that while West Ham was prepared to meet Lille’s £30 million asking price for the Canadian international, they balked at the additional agent fees, which amounted to a third of the transfer value.

David, who has scored 84 goals in 183 appearances for Lille and played a key role in Canada’s run to the Copa America semi-finals, is expected to leave Lille this summer with only 12 months left on his contract. New West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui is keen on signing a new striker following the £40 million acquisition of Max Kilman from Wolves.

However, the club’s executives are firm on keeping agent fees low, having paid £13.8 million to intermediaries last season compared to Chelsea’s £75 million. Consequently, West Ham are now prioritizing Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran, available for around £35 million, and are also considering Brentford’s Ivan Toney, whose asking price has dropped to under £50 million.
