Mason Greenwood has officially transferred to Marseille from Manchester United in a deal reportedly valued at €30 million (£25m/$34m). Before his media unveiling at a press conference, the 22-year-old was already on the training pitch for his first session with the French club.
Marseille shared an Instagram post highlighting Greenwood’s initial training session on Friday, captioned, “First session, Mason already at work.”
The transfer has stirred controversy in Marseille due to previous allegations against Greenwood, including attempted rape, assault, and coercive behavior, which were dropped last year. The move has faced backlash from fans, who have campaigned on social media against the transfer, and from the city’s mayor. Despite this, coach Roberto De Zerbi has pledged to support Greenwood publicly.
Greenwood acknowledged on Thursday that he anticipated questions about the controversy and reiterated this sentiment during a press conference the next day. With his future now settled, the England international is set to begin his debut season in Ligue 1.
