According to Fabrizio Romano, Thiago is preparing to retire at the age of 33. Beginning his professional journey in 2008 with Barcelona B, the former Spain international became a mainstay at Camp Nou before transferring to Bayern Munich in 2013. After seven successful years with Bayern, he joined Liverpool in 2020.
Thiago has faced persistent injury issues in recent seasons, managing only five minutes of competitive play during the 2023/24 season. Despite making 98 appearances for Liverpool, hip and muscle injuries significantly impacted his playing time and influenced his decision to retire. Earlier rumors briefly linked him with a return to La Liga with Girona.
Throughout his illustrious career, Thiago amassed an impressive collection of trophies. He secured four La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Barcelona. At Bayern Munich, he added seven Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokals, and another set of Champions League and Club World Cup trophies. His stint at Liverpool saw him claim the FA Cup and finish as a Champions League runner-up.
Despite his immense talent, Thiago earned only 46 caps for Spain, facing stiff competition from midfield stalwarts like Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Cesc Fabregas.
Looking forward, Thiago intends to pursue new opportunities beyond playing. Romano suggests he has a desire to remain connected to football, potentially exploring roles as a manager or coach in the future.
