Marcel Sabitzer fell to the ground after being struck by a coin during Austria’s 2-1 defeat to Turkey in Leipzig on Tuesday night. The former Manchester United star faced multiple items thrown his way as he approached a corner kick in front of a section of Turkey supporters. Cups and other objects rained down on Sabitzer, who now plays for Borussia Dortmund, before a smaller item hit him, causing him to collapse.
Turkey players quickly intervened, urging their fans to cease the attacks. Despite Sabitzer’s incident, Austria’s hopes of reaching their first-ever quarter-final were dashed. The match saw piles of cups cleared off the pitch during the second half. This incident is among several crowd disturbances at Euro 2024, prompting UEFA to issue nearly £1 million in fines. Turkey fans were previously involved in a pre-match brawl with Georgia in Dortmund.
Additionally, the Scottish Football Association faced a £7,640 fine for fan misconduct. Turkey advanced to the quarter-finals, set to face the Netherlands on Saturday. Merih Demiral’s double strike, including the fastest-ever goal in a last-16 Euro clash, and a crucial save by keeper Mert Gunok, secured their place in the last eight for the first time in 16 years.
