Barcelona has reportedly deemed Nico Williams an “unrealistic” signing and is instead plotting a shock move for Hull City’s Jaden Philogene. The La Liga giants are eager to bolster their attacking ranks this summer after finishing ten points behind champions Real Madrid. While they have been linked with Athletic Bilbao star Williams, 21, their ongoing financial issues make a big-money transfer difficult.
Spanish outlet Relevo claims Barcelona has identified 22-year-old Philogene as Plan B. Born in West London, Philogene joined Aston Villa’s academy as a child and made his senior debut in May 2021. After loan spells at Stoke and Cardiff, Hull City snapped him up for £5 million in September. Philogene impressed with 12 goals and six assists in the Championship, also making his England U21 debut.
Barcelona has contacted Hull about a potential transfer, initially seeking a loan to assess Philogene’s suitability. He could replace ex-Leeds star Raphinha, whom Barcelona is trying to offload. Despite the lure of Barca, Hull can command a decent fee, as Philogene has two years left on his contract with an option for a third.
