Kalvin Phillips, the 28-year-old midfielder, is targeting a surprising transfer to Barcelona, believing the club’s style would “fit him like a glove.” Phillips has struggled for form and game time since leaving Leeds United in 2022, making just 20 appearances this season. His campaign began with Manchester City, where he played only 10 times before being loaned to West Ham United for six months.
However, his stint at West Ham was underwhelming. A mistake on his debut against Bournemouth and a subsequent red card against Nottingham Forest marred his time there. He also featured in a 6-0 home loss to Arsenal and was at fault for Newcastle’s winning goal in a 4-3 defeat. These performances contributed to his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming European Championships in Germany.
According to Spanish publication Sport, Barcelona had expressed interest in Phillips, who reportedly agreed to join in January, but the deal fell through due to financial issues. Despite interest from Everton, Phillips is keen on the move to Barcelona, where new manager Hansi Flick has taken over. An emotional return to Leeds United was also considered, but their failure to secure Premier League promotion halted that possibility.
