Liverpool suffered a setback in the Carabao Cup final as midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was stretchered off after a late tackle from Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo. The Dutch midfielder had to be carried off the field in the 23rd minute after Caicedo caught him with his studs on the ankle. Despite receiving treatment on the field for several minutes, Gravenberch was unable to continue, forcing Jurgen Klopp into a tactical rethink with defender Joe Gomez coming on as a replacement.
Klopp was visibly furious over the tackle and voiced his frustration at the fourth official. Gravenberch’s injury adds to Liverpool’s growing injury list, with ten first-team players already sidelined. The likes of Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara, and Mo Salah were among those missing from the final due to fitness issues.
The first half was not without controversy, as Raheem Sterling had a goal disallowed for Chelsea after Nicolas Jackson was ruled marginally offside in the build-up. Liverpool, currently top of the Premier League table by one point, will be hoping for a quick recovery for Gravenberch as they navigate a busy schedule, including an FA Cup tie against Southampton next.
