Echeverri, hailed as the ‘next Lionel Messi’ in Argentina, has committed to a contract with the triple-winning team until 2028. However, his immediate future involves staying with River Plate until the conclusion of 2024.
Making a mark at the under-17 World Cup in Peru in 2023, Echeverri emerged as one of the standout players. His notable achievements included scoring five goals in seven appearances, contributing significantly to Argentina’s captivating journey to the semi-finals. Among his memorable feats was a remarkable hat-trick against Brazil in the quarter-finals.
Echeverri marked his debut with River Plate’s first team in June 2023, operating under the guidance of former City coach Martin Demichelis. In a 3-1 victory over Instituto Cordoba, the young forward, who celebrated his 18th birthday at the beginning of the month, provided an assist. With six appearances for River’s first team and 23 appearances for the Argentina under-17 team, where he served as captain during the World Cup, Echeverri showcased his burgeoning talent. Additionally, he had the opportunity to train alongside Messi while working with Argentina’s senior team.
Echeverri gained widespread recognition at the age of 11 after a stellar performance at the Champions Trophy youth tournament in Venice, where he scored nine goals in seven games.
Despite signing with Manchester City, the 18-year-old will continue with River Plate for the remainder of the year, following a similar path as Julian Alvarez did when he joined City from Millonarios in January 2022. His anticipated integration into Pep Guardiola’s squad is set for January 2025, where he will join a formidable attacking lineup featuring Erling Haaland, Alvarez, and Kevin De Bruyne.
