According to former goalkeeper Sebastien Frey, there is a chance for Inter to secure the signing of Karim Benzema this month, with the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner being considered ‘a possibility’ for the club.
Benzema, the 36-year-old French striker, moved to Saudi Arabia last summer, signing a lucrative three-year contract with Al-Ittihad worth up to €200m net per season. He has had a decent start in the Saudi Pro League, recording nine goals and five assists in 15 matches.
Recent reports suggest that Benzema is discontent with life at Al-Ittihad and is eager to depart from the club this month. He was excluded from the team’s training camp in Dubai and is heavily linked with a potential move to Manchester United.
Frey, in an interview with TV Play via Calciomercato.com, shared his insights on Benzema’s situation, hinting at a possible transfer to Inter this month.
“Benzema is at odds with Saudi Arabia, he could be on the market as early as January. I’ve read and heard about Marotta, who hasn’t said yes to his arrival but hasn’t denied it either. The priority is Sanchez’s exit, if he leaves Inter then Benzema can be a possibility.”
As of now, Alexis Sanchez, whose contract with Inter expires at the end of the season, has rejected any interest from Saudi Arabia. However, if his stance changes in the coming weeks and he decides to leave, Inter might consider pursuing Benzema, although the financial aspect of affording his wages poses a significant challenge.
