Former Brazil and Barcelona footballer, Dani Alves, is confronting serious legal challenges as prosecutors seek a nine-year jail term for alleged rape, according to court documents. The 40-year-old, who has been in custody without bail since his arrest in January, is accused of assaulting a woman in a private toilet at a Barcelona nightclub in December. While Alves admits to consensual sex, the victim claims he prevented her from leaving the cubicle and slapped her.
The charges were initially referred to as “sexual assault” until the recent release of a seven-page pre-trial indictment in Spain. The proposed sentence includes a demand for Alves to pay £130,000 to the victim. The footballer, a married father of two, has publicly apologized to his wife, model Joana Sanz, for the infidelity. A trial date is pending.
In an exclusive interview from prison, Alves stated, “The only person I have to ask for forgiveness is my wife, Joana Sanz,” emphasizing the need for a public apology due to the public nature of the incident. Notably, in December in Qatar, Alves became the oldest player to represent Brazil at the World Cup.
