Liverpool icon John Barnes believes that his former team is well aware of Mohamed Salah’s future trajectory. Despite the 31-year-old star recently committing to a three-year extension in 2022, a hefty £150 million offer from Saudi Arabia emerged in the last moments of the summer transfer window.
While no immediate interest is foreseen in January, it’s anticipated that ambitious Saudi Pro League clubs will pursue Salah’s services at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
Salah, undeterred by external speculation, has kicked off the season in sensational form, netting an impressive 10 goals in just 12 Premier League matches. Barnes is confident that Salah will continue to dazzle at Anfield beyond this term.
Addressing the issue at a Quality Street sustainability campaign, Barnes highlighted Salah’s revered status among Muslims globally and in Saudi Arabia.
Despite this, Salah has expressed his desire to honor his Liverpool contract. Barnes speculates that an opportunity from Saudi Arabia may arise, but the timing remains uncertain.
Barnes anticipates Salah staying with Liverpool for the next two years, albeit acknowledging that circumstances might change.
Liverpool, aware of the potential for a record-breaking bid, have tentatively planned for succession with Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane. Mirror Football disclosed that Sane, 27, has been identified as Liverpool’s main target if Salah departs.
Financially, Liverpool would be well-equipped due to the lucrative deal for Salah, but Sane’s past affiliation with Manchester City could complicate matters.
Reports from German outlet Bild suggest that Manchester City is monitoring Sane’s situation at Munich and might seek to bring him back to the Etihad, having sold him to Bayern in 2020.
Similar to Salah, Sane has had an impressive start to the 2023/24 season, registering eight goals and six assists in 11 league games for Thomas Tuchel’s team after scoring 35 goals in 135 appearances for Manchester City across four years.
