“The London Stadium experienced a deluge not only from the skies above but seemingly from within its own confines as well. West Ham faced off against Serbian side Backa Topola in their inaugural Europa League match of the season on Thursday evening.

The players found themselves not only battling their opponents but also contending with the relentless downpour that plagued East London.

The torrential rain wreaked havoc in the vicinity of the stadium, as videos circulating on social media captured the weather’s disruptive impact on the concourses.

One particular clip depicted water cascading onto the concourse, prompting fans to seek shelter. The usually solid ground was left nearly submerged, creating sizable puddles in areas where fans typically queue for food and beverages.

Nevertheless, the inclement weather did not deter the match from commencing as scheduled at 8 pm.

West Ham conceded an early goal to their adversaries, adding a layer of challenge to David Moyes’ team, who had triumphed in the European Conference League last season. Moyes shared his perspective, remarking, “I think the European competitions have got tougher. So many of the teams who were regular Champions League teams have found themselves in the Europa League, and quite a lot who were in the Europa League have found themselves in the Conference League.”

He continued, “European football is really, really strong – obviously the Champions League is always the one you want to be recognised for, but I think it’s great that we’ve got the Europa League. “We’re thrilled that we’re in it again, two years out of three, and I do believe that the competition has got tougher from when we were in it two years ago.”

Moyes also pointed out the presence of strong Premier League teams like Liverpool and Brighton in the Europa League, emphasizing Brighton’s current form and Liverpool’s rich history in European football. He added, “You’ve also got to remember that we’re waiting on whoever finishes third in their Champions League group to drop back into this competition too. So to talk about who could be favourites at this stage is not really worthwhile.”
